Wood is suitable for use in multistorey building construction with barely any restrictions. This is new and requires creative rethinking of tried and tested practices in wood construction: classical categories can be replaced by mixed construction methods as necessary within a project, which yields completely new possibilities in designing wood structures. The Manual provides architects, engineers and wood specialists with the essential expertise on the new systematics and construction methodology, from the design to prefabrication to the implementation on site. It lays the grounds for mutual understanding among everyone involved in the project, to facilitate the necessary cooperation in the integral planning and construction process.

“This established textbook provides an understanding of materials’ behaviour through knowledge of their chemical and physical structure. It covers the main classes of construction materials: metals, concrete, other ceramics (including bricks and masonry), polymers, fibre composites, bituminous materials, timber, and glass. It provides a clear and comprehensive perspective on the whole range of materials used in modern construction, to form a must-have for civil and structural engineering students, and those on courses such as architecture, surveying and construction. It begins with a Fundamentals section followed by a section on each of the major groups of materials. In this new edition : The section on fibre composites FRP and FRC has been completely restructured and updated ; Typical questions with answers to any numerical examples are given at the end of each section, as well as an instructor’s manual with further questions and answers ; The links in all parts have also been updated and extended, including links to free reports from The Concrete Centre, as well as other online resources and material suppliers’ websites.”

Glass has long transformed the architectural landscape. From the Crystal Palace through to the towering glass spires of today's cities, few architectural materials have held such immense symbolic resonance in the modern era. 'The Age of Glass' explores the cultural and technological ascension of glass in modern and contemporary architecture. Showing how the use of glass is driven as much by changing cultural concerns as it is by developments in technology and style, it traces the richly interwoven material, symbolic, and ideological histories of glass to show how it has produced and dispersed meaning in architecture over the past two centuries. The book's chapters focus on key moments within the modern history of architecture, moments when glass came to the forefront of architectural thought, and which illustrate how glass has been used at different times to project different cultural ideas.

Materiality is a recurring and central issue in architecture. This book explains how materials are "constructed", how they become cultural substances. Metamorphism investigates the complex relationship between natural materials and technology, science and sensuality. Gottfried Semper (1803-1879) made the notion of Stoffwechsel the key element of his theory. With this concept he intended to explain how a structural form originally bound to a method of processing is transferred from one material to another, liberated from its original function. For the first time, the book investigates the subject from a historic point of view whilst reflecting on current interdisciplinary research. Examples from Aalto to Zumthor illustrate the specific aspects of historic and contemporary material concepts.
